DECEMBER 19th: WEATHER AND HIGHWAY UPDATE

A Winter Storm Warning for the Sierra Nevada remains in effect until 4 pm today.

This will be reduced to a Winter Weather Advisory above 5,000 feet, through 10 pm tonight.

Snow levels will mostly range from 4000 to 5000 feet today.

Total snow accumulations of four to fourteen inches are expected above 5000 feet.

Winds of ten to twenty mph will continue with gusts up to forty-five mph.

Temperatures are in the mid twenties.

Weekend travel is impacted with slick snow covered roads, travel delays and chain controls over the Sierra.

After a break in the rain and snow tonight, another winter storm is expected to spread over Northern California on Sunday. One inch to one inch-and-a-half of rain is expected in the Mother Lode. One third to a half-an-inch of rain is likely in the Central Valley. Snow levels could drop to 3000 feet. Five to nine inches of snow accumulation is expected.

This wet weather pattern is expected to continue through Christmas Day.

A Winter Storm Warning means that significant amounts of snow are either expected or are occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties.
