The Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District is hosting a community meeting on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at 10:00 AM at the Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine fire station (24247 Highway 108). At this meeting the District’s Strategic Planning Committee will report on its work regarding the District operations and finances. The public is encouraged to attend and provide comments as well as ask questions. The Board of Directors is seeking comments, ideas, and questions from members of all of the communities that are served by its fire fighters including Confidence, Leisure Pines, Sierra Village, Lakeview, Whispering Pines, Odd Fellows Park, and Long Barn.

In addition to the Board of Directors and District staff, a representative from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) will also be at the meeting to answer any questions about the services provided by the ISO. This is not a fire hazard insurance meeting; however providing fire services and fire insurance are interwoven and modifications in one often result in modifications to the other.

Currently the MWSP FPD, in cooperation with the Tuolumne County Fire Department, provides fire, emergency and related services to communities adjacent to the MWSP FPD. These service are provided without a direct supporting revenue source. The Board will review the way that these services are provided, the involvement of the MWSP FPD, the problems presented with the present system, and explore potential solutions.

“The overall financial health of the District is such that we are able to sustain the costs of running the fire department if costs and revenue stay the same; what we cannot deal with – the revenue stream does not support – is a downturn in the economy, inflation, unexpected and exceptional costs, and predictable expenses such as replacement fire engine, uninsured catastrophes, deferred maintenance,” said Bill Schneiderman, Board President.

Those planning to attend are respectfully asked to RSVP (your name is not necessary, just a head count) to (209) 586-5256. We want to make sure that there is enough room for everyone at this meeting.

The Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District serves the communities of Mi Wuk Village, Sugar Pine, and surrounding communities on State Highway 108. It is nestled in the tall trees at about 4,600 feet above sea level, on the edge of the Stanislaus National Forest. The District is served by two captains, intern and volunteer firefighters, as well as a Fire Chief and a secretary. It is governed by a five member elected Board of Directors that oversees an annual budget of about $450,000.00
