Cal Fire property inspections will begin on May 1st and we really need more volunteers to assist in this program. If you can volunteer some time each week to join the existing Volunteers in Prevention (VIPs) we will be able to cover all of Sugar Pine and Mi Wuk Village in May and begin second inspections in June. Just call the non-emergency phone at the fire station: 209-586-5256 and leave your name. You will receive a call back. And yes, there is training.
Our goal is to make our community as safe a possible from wildfires. For this to happen we need inspectors (VIPs) as well as compliance from property owners.
Start clearing your needles, leaves and downed debris 100′ from your dwelling, and any structure, on your property NOW. You are allowed to burn your debris on scheduled burn days. (533-5598 for permissive burn day information) You can also haul your debris to the Slash Site west of Hwy 108, across from the lower Twain Harte entrance, or to the Slash Pile on Camage Road off of Standard Road, also west of Hwy 108. There are individuals who will haul your slash for you, for a fee of course.
You will NOT be cited for the many dead trees that have been ‘downed’ and left on your property by PG&E.
Unfortunately Tuolumne County does not require vacant lots to be cleared of debris and hazardous materials. Responsible property owners will hopefully voluntarily clear their lots as good neighbors. My suggestion: bombard the county offices with phone calls and letters to reverse this (insert the word of your choice!) policy.
The roadside clearing done by Hope’s Tree Service via the Cal Fire SRA grant won by our Mi Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District is a good and beautiful start to making our community as fire safe as possible. They are almost through with Round One of the project: clearing the large brush and branches (items that require chipping) from the roadsides. Round Two will commence as soon as Round One ends. This will entail clearing the growth along the roadsides in Sugar Pine and Mi Wuk to within 4″ and raking the edges of the roads. DO NOT PUT ANY YARD DEBRIS FROM YOUR OWN PROPERTY ALONG THE EDGE OF THE ROAD. IT WILL NOT BE REMOVED. Maybe some year we can win another grant than would include roadside pick up in the community.
