CAL FIRE defensible space inspections are underway in the Mi Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District. The VIPs (from the district) and CAL FIRE inspectors are working cooperatively to ensure our community’s safety. Over the next several weeks you will see us conducting inspections and you will be receiving a notice of your inspection in the mail.
The compliance for defensible space is a year round requirement. We will be inspecting for vertical and horizontal clearances, spark arrestors and propane tank clearances just to name a few. Public Resource Code 4291 sets the parameters for defensible space. To educate yourself on defensible space requirements, visit http://www.readyforwildfire.org/Defensible-Space/ .
At the time of this writing, debris burning, with a valid burn permit, above 3500′ (zone 2) is allowed on permissive burn days as designated by Air Pollution Control District (APCD). Burn day information can be found by calling 209-533-5598.
We’d like to remind you that as conditions continue to warm and dry the availability of burn days will be limited and eventually be restricted for the season. While completing your defensible space clearance, time is of the essence if your choice is to burn the cleared debris.
Alternatives to burning are available.
- Chipping: equipment is available for renting at several businesses in Sonora.
- Plainview Slash Site off of Hwy 108 near by West Twain Harte entrance.
- Cal Sierra Earth Resource Facility: Camage Road in Sonora
