Yes, Fire in Canyon Area on Eastern Boundary of Mi Wuk Village

I live on the eastern boundary of Mi Wuk and this evening, around 5.45-6.00 p.m. I heard repeated fly-bys of a Cal Fire spotter plane.  Then helicopters.  After seeing smoke coming out of the canyon, around 6.30 I headed up the fire road behind my house to where we call the ‘helicopter pad’.  It’s a large open space that can be reached by vehicle via Muheli Road.

According to a forestry employee, the fire was in the area of the old Ryan’s Mine–several fire roads below the ‘helicopter’ pad but not as far as the Tuolumne River.

My ‘line of sight’ was definitely impaired by trees.  Imagine that!  Spotter planes are still flying intermittently and have been since about 5.15 p.m.   There were 2 or 3 (hard to tell) helicopters dropping water (they must have been dipping into Lyon’s Reservoir) as well as two small bombers dropping retardant.  I managed to capture a bit of one of their drops.

All is calm now but I’m sure there will be crews on site overnight.  TOO CLOSE!  No details as to the source of the fire at this time.  I’ll check with our Fire Station in the morning and report back with what I find.
